Stanley County is located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The county was formed in 1873 and named after David S. Stanley, commander of Fort Sully. The county seat is Fort Pierre. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2016, the county has a population of approximately 2,966 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,517 square miles, of which 1,444 square miles is land and 73 square miles is water. Stanley County borders the following counties: Dewey County to the north; Sully County to the northeast; Hughes County to the east; Lyman County to the southeast; Jones County to the south; and Haakon County to the west. The primary administrative responsibilities of the County Clerk of Courts Office are as follows:

• Opening, maintaining, storing and retrieving court files as needed in different types of cases.
• Processing traffic tickets and other criminal complaints, receipting and disbursing fines, fees, costs, bond and restitution associated with same.
• Working closely with the public, law enforcement and attorneys in maintaining judges’ calendars of court dates and assisting judges in the courtroom.
• Summoning and qualifying jurors, assist judge in juror selection process, and authorize payment of jurors.
• Performing magistrate functions such as setting bond, handling initial appearances, issuing warrants, entering default judgments in small claims cases and performing marriages.

Stanley County Register of Deeds Office Information

The Register of Deeds Office of Stanley County preserves all real estate records through a scanning process. Documents that are scanned and recorded include deeds, mortgages and all types of miscellaneous documents. Land records preserved at the Register of Deeds Office date back to 1891. This office also files state, federal and county liens, mechanic’s liens, business names registrations, UCC liens, military discharge records and other types of miscellaneous filings. In addition, the office also issues certified copies of birth, death and marriage records.

Certified copies of birth, death and marriage records are issued at a cost of $15.00 each to certain persons only. Informational copies are issued at a cost of $15.00 upon request to individuals.
