Sanborn County is located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The county was formed in 1883 and named after George W. Sanborn, president of the Milwaukee Railroad. The county seat is Woonsocket. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 570 square miles, of which 569 square miles is land and 1.2 square miles is water. County borders the following counties: Beadle County, South Dakota to the north; Miner County, South Dakota to the east; Hanson County, South Dakota to the southeast; Davison County, South Dakota to the south; Aurora County, South Dakota to the southwest; and Jerauld County, South Dakota to the west. Sanborn County Clerk of Courts Office Information

Under supervision of the Chief Justice, who is the administrative head of the Unified Judicial System, the State Court Administrator is the non-judicial officer who implements the rules and policies of the Supreme Court as they apply to the operations and administration of the courts and is the liaison between the judicial branch and the other branches of state and local government. To ensure efficient and responsive operation, the State Court Administrator’s Office provides centralized administrative assistance and support services to the entire Unified Judicial System, which is composed of 7 Judicial Circuits. Sanborn County is part of the 3rd Judicial Circuit which is made up of fourteen counties. Those other counties are: Beadle, Brookings, Clark, Codington, Deuel, Grant, Hamlin, Hand, Jerauld, Kingsbury, Lake, Miner, and Moody.

The primary administrative responsibilities of the County Clerk of Courts Office are as follows:

  • Assisting with requests for information on court procedures, fees, court dates, and forms.
  • Processing passports, assessing and receipting fees.
  • Opening, maintaining, storing and retrieving court files as needed in different types of cases.
  • Processing traffic tickets and other criminal complaints, receipting and disbursing fines, fees, costs, bond and restitution associated with same.
  • Working closely with the public, law enforcement and attorneys in maintaining judges’ calendars of court dates and assisting judges in the courtroom.
  • Summoning and qualifying jurors, assist judge in juror selection process, and authorize payment of jurors.
  • Performing magistrate functions such as setting bond, handling initial appearances, issuing warrants, entering default judgments in small claims cases and performing marriages.
