Potter County is located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The county was formed in 1875 and named after Joel A. Potter, a territorial legislator. The county seat is Gettysburg. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2016, the county has a population of approximately 2,329 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 899 square miles, of which 861 square miles is land and 38 square miles is water. Potter County borders the following counties: Walworth County to the north; Edmunds County to the northeast; Faulk County to the east; Hyde County to the southeast; Sully County to the south; and Dewey County to the west. Potter County Register of Deeds Office Information

The Register of Deeds is the elected official county record keeper. The Register of Deeds issues and files marriage licenses, birth and death certificates, burial permits, real estate transactions (including deeds, mortgages and mortgage transfers), federal and state tax liens, state unemployment tax, military discharge records, businesses and new business.
