Grant County is located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The county was formed in 1873 and named after Ulysses S. Grant (1822 – 1885), U.S. President and American Civil War general. The county seat is Milbank. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2016, the county has a population of approximately 7,148 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 688 square miles of which 681 square miles is land and 6.1 square miles is water. Grant County borders the following counties: Roberts County to the north; Big Stone County, Minnesota to the northeast; Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota to the east; Deuel County to the south; Codington County to the southwest and Day County to the west. The primary responsibilities of the County Clerk of Courts Office are as follows:
- Assisting with requests for information on court procedures, fees, court dates, and forms.
- Processing passports, assessing and receipting fees.
- Opening, maintaining, storing and retrieving court files as needed in different types of cases.
- Processing traffic tickets and other criminal complaints, receipting and disbursing fines, fees, costs, bond and restitution associated with same.
- Working closely with the public, law enforcement and attorneys in maintaining judges’ calendars of court dates and assisting judges in the courtroom.
- Summoning and qualifying jurors, assist judge in juror selection process, and authorize payment of jurors.
- Performing magistrate functions such as setting bond, handling initial appearances, issuing warrants, entering default judgments in small claims cases and performing marriages.

Grant County Register of Deeds Office Information
The Register of Deeds Office is the vital records library for the county. The office records deeds, mortgages, assignments & addendums to mortgages, satisfactions, easements, UCC’s, affidavits, plats, military discharges, powers of attorney, miscellaneous records, etc. This office also files federal tax liens, SD sales tax liens, unemployment tax liens fictitious business name registrations, mechanic’s liens, locations notices, etc.
In addition, the Register of Deeds Office issues and maintains marriage licenses, certified copies of birth, death and marriage certificates, military discharges, and certified copies of recorded documents, credit searches on federal tax liens, sales tax liens and unemployment tax liens.
Most records maintained at the Register of Deeds Office are public and the public is welcome to come in and do research in the office during regular business hours. Property searches are conducted by the office. All requests must be in writing, or faxed to the office. The fee for the search is $20.00 plus copy and fax fees. Fees are required at time of service. A property search done in the office by an individual will receive instructions and assistance on the Index, deed, and mortgage books. Copies of the records can also be provided upon request.
