Butte County is located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The county was formed in 1883 and named after Buttes in the region. The county seat is Belle Fourche. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2016, the county has a population of approximately 10,205 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,266 square miles of which 2,250 square miles is land and 16 square miles is water. Butte County borders the following counties: Harding County to the north; Perkins County to the northeast; Meade County to the southeast; Lawrence County to the southwest; Crook County, Wyoming to the west and Carter County, Montana to the northwest.Butte County has six zip codes. Butte County Clerk of Courts Office Information

The primary administrative duties of the Clerk of Courts Office include: handling requests for information on court procedures, fees, court dates, and forms; maintaining court files; processing traffic tickets and other criminal complaints, receipting and disbursing fines, fees, costs, bond and restitutions. The Clerk also works closely with the public, law enforcement and attorneys in maintaining judges’ calendars of court dates and assisting judges in the courtroom. In addition, the Clerk of Courts is responsible for summoning and qualifying jurors, assist judge in juror selection process, and authorize payment of jurors. Other miscellaneous duties of the Clerk include: setting bond, handling initial appearances, issuing warrants, entering default judgments in small claims cases and performing marriages.

Butte County Register of Deeds Office Information

The Register of Deeds Office is the primary records office of the county. The office records documents to pertaining to real estate such as: plats, deeds, mortgages, contracts, etc. The Register of Deeds Office is Butte County has records that date back to the late 1800’s to present. The fee to record most land records are $30.00 for up to 50 pages to record. Plats are $60.00. The Register of Deeds Office also has birth and death records dating back to 1905 to present. Deaths are statewide from 1960 to present while marriages records date back from 1950 to present. Certified copies of vital records can be obtained for $15 for each copy while marriage licenses are $40.
