Brown County is located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The county was formed in 1879 and named after Alfred Brown, territorial legislator. The county seat is Aberdeen. Brown County Vital Records Office Information
Only the Register of Deeds’ office is authorized to issue copies of South Dakota vital records, such as birth, death and marriage. This office also issues burial permits and maintains burial records within each respective county. According to state law, birth, death and marriage records are not open to the public; however, burial records are available. The Register of Deeds office works closely with the South Dakota Department of Health concerning vital records matters in the state of South Dakota. The Department of Health also issues copies of vital record and performs other various services important to South Dakota citizens.
South Dakota Birth records filed with the South Dakota Department of Health date back to 1905. To obtain a copy of a birth record, a person must submit a completed birth record form and provide proof of identity along with a $15.00 fee for each copy requested.

The basic functions of the Clerk’s Office are:
- Assisting with requests for information on court procedures, fees, court dates, and forms.
- Opening, maintaining, storing and retrieving court files as needed in different types of cases.
- Processing traffic tickets and other criminal complaints, receipting and disbursing fines, fees, costs, bond and restitution associated with same.
- Working closely with the public, law enforcement and attorneys in maintaining judges’ calendars of court dates and assisting judges in the courtroom.
- Summoning and qualifying jurors, assist judge in juror selection process, and authorize payment of jurors.
- Performing magistrate functions such as setting bond, handling initial appearances, issuing warrants, entering default judgments in small claims cases and performing marriages.
