Brookings County, South Dakota Overview

Brookings County is located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The county was formed in 1862 and named after Wilmot Brookings (1830 – 1905), Dakota Territory Supreme Court justice. The county seat is Brookings. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2016, the county has a population of approximately 34,135 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 805 square miles of which 782 square miles is land and 13 square miles is water. Brookings County borders the following counties: Deuel County to the north; Lincoln County, Minnesota to the east; Moody County to the south; Lake County, South Dakota to the southwest; Kingsbury County to the west and Hamlin County to the northwest. Brookings County Clerk of Court’s Office Information

Under supervision of the Chief Justice, who is the administrative head of the Unified Judicial System, the State Court Administrator is the non-judicial officer who implements the rules and policies of the Supreme Court as they apply to the operations and administration of the courts and is the liaison between the judicial branch and the other branches of state and local government.

To ensure efficient and responsive operation, the State Court Administrator’s Office provides centralized administrative assistance and support services to the entire Unified Judicial System, which is composed of 7 Judicial Circuits. Brookings County is part of the 3rd Judicial Circuit which is made up of fourteen counties.

The Clerk of Court is responsible for filing and maintaining the following services: jury duty, criminal cases, civil cases, divorces, collections, child support, probate, small claims, mental health, protection orders, etc. In addition, the Clerk of Court attends each session of district court; maintains records of orders and judgments of the court; draws names of jurors, and keeps records of jurors and witnesses for trials.

South Dakota has a statewide record search program. CRIMINAL cases are available, unless sealed, on the UJS system from 1989 to present. Civil cases, unless confidential or sealed, are available from 2003 to present.

The Register of Deeds office is the “library” for the county. Our office records Brookings County real estate documents which include: deeds, mortgages, easements, satisfactions, etc. The office has real estate records begin that dates back to mid-1870s through today. The Register of Deeds office also records and maintains other records such as: burial records, fictitious business name filings, mechanics liens, military discharges, powers of attorney, state, federal, and county liens, UCC and other documents. In addition, this office also issues marriage licenses and certified copies of birth, marriage, and death records for the State of South Dakota.
