Washington County is located in the southern region of Rhode Island. The locals often refer to it as South County. The county seat and largest town is South Kingstown. The county was created in 1729 as part of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Originally, it was named Kings County until 1781 when the name was changed to Washington in honor of George Washington, the first US President.
