Bristol County, Rhode Island Overview

Bristol County is located in the eastern region of Rhode Island. Its county seat is also called Bristol. The county was formed in 1747 from a portion of Bristol County, Massachusetts. It was named after the county seat (called a shire town) of the Plymouth Colony. The county’s total area measures 45 square miles, the third smallest county in the US. Based on the 2016 census, 49,067 people are living in this area which makes this the least populated county in the state. The surrounding counties are Providence County in the northwest, Bristol County (MA) in the northeast, Newport County in the south, and Kent County in the west.
