Montour County is located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The county was formed in 1850 and named after Madame Montour, colonial ambassador to the Native Americans. The county seat is Danville. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2015, the county has a population of approximately 18,557people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 132 square miles of which 130 square miles is land and 2.1 square miles is water. Montour County borders the following counties: Lycoming County to the north; Columbia County to the east and Northumberland County to the south & west. Montour County has nine zip codes. The Prothonotary acts as the legal custodian of civil documents filed with the Montour County Court of Common Pleas. This office is responsible for maintaining accurate indices, case dockets, record keeping security and provides user-friendly access to the same for the public. The Prothonotary also handles passport applications and assists local citizens in obtaining passports. The Clerk of Courts office maintains all criminal records at the Common Pleas level. Montour County Register and Recorder’s Office Information

All legal instruments of Montour County including deeds, real estate transfers and agreements, mortgages and assignments are filed with the Recorder of Deeds. In addition, state highway plans, charters, powers of attorney, sub­division plans and commissions for elected officials, notary publics, and military service discharges are also recorded in this office.
