Wheeler County is located in Central Oregon. Its county seat is Fossil. Wheeler County was created in 1899 from portions of Crook, Grant, and Gilliam Counties. It was named in honor of an early settler, Henry H. Wheeler. The total area of the county is 1,715 square miles. Based on the 2016 census, the estimated population is 1,344. The county is bordered by Gilliam County in the north, Morrow County in the northeast, Grant County in the east, Crook County in the south, Jefferson County and Wasco County in the west. Wheeler County Officials Information
The County Clerk is responsible for maintaining a permanent public record of real estate transactions, liens, mining claim locations, plats and partitioning maps. In addition, the office handles the recording of certain records as well as preserving historical county records. The County Clerk is also tasked with the following duties: voter registration, conducting elections in the county, and maintaining election statistics. Other duties of the County Clerk include maintaining a permanent record of the official proceedings and actions taken by the County Court; acting as clerk for the Board of Property Tax Appeals; providing Notary Public services; maintaining County Survey records; serving as the County Registrar for the State Vital Records office; and issuing marriage licenses, death certificates, and birth certificates.
