Union County can be found in the northeast region of Oregon. La Grande serves as county seat. The county was created in 1864 form a portion of Wasco County and named for the town of Union which, in turn, was named in honor of the Union states of the American Civil War. Union County is bordered in the north and east by Wallowa County, in the west by Umatilla County, and in the south by Grant and Baker Counties.
