Polk County can be found in the northwestern region of Oregon. Dallas is the county seat. The county was founded in 1845 and named in honor of the 11th US President, James Knox Polk. Based on the 2016 survey, the population is estimated to be 81,823. The total area of the county is 744 square miles, most of which is land. Polk County is bordered in the north by Yamhill County, in the east by Marion County, in the southeast by Linn County, in the south by Benton County, in the west by Lincoln County, and the northwest by Lincoln County. The Polk County Clerk is responsible for conducting elections, preserving various records, ensuring various records are available to the public, issuing marriage licenses and domestic partnership licenses, and serving as the BOPTA contact during property tax appeal period. The Election Department of the County Clerk is also responsible for voter registration, tabulation of election results, and certification of the election. The Recording Department of the County Clerk handles records dating back to mid-1800’s such as real estate records, UCC records, and military discharges. The Assessor’s Office handles property assessments and appraisals as well as maintains records on property tax accounts for Polk County, maps, and information on property locations, descriptions, and ownership. Court records can be accessed by the public at the primary records office which can be found on the third floor of the annex. Juvenile court records can be found in the historic courthouse building. Criminal records can be found in the jail building.
