Crook County, Oregon Overview

Crook County is located in Central Oregon. Prineville is the county seat. The county was founded in 1882 and named in honor of American Civil War veteran, General George Crook, who also fought in various Indian wars in Eastern Oregon.

The county is comprised of 2,979 square miles of land and 8.2 square miles of water. Based on the 2016 census, around 22,570 people are currently residing in this area. Crook County is bordered by Jefferson County and Wheeler County in the north, Grant County and Harney County in the east, and Deschutes County in the south and west. The County Clerk for Crook County is Cheryl Seely. The office is comprised of two divisions – the Records Division and the Election Division. Each division has a deputy that handles the services provided by the Clerk’s office. The office hours are 8am to 5pm, Mondays to Fridays.

The County Clerk is responsible for the safekeeping of public records for the county. These records include property transactions, marriages, Military Discharges. The office also issues marriage licenses, serves on the Board of Property Tax Appeals, and maintains the proceedings of County Court meetings. The election division of the Clerk’s Office handles voter registration, maintains voting lists, accepts declaration of candidacy, and acts as executor of the dictates of the County Court. In addition, the Clerk also accepts passport applications, provides notary services, and conducts property, historical, and genealogy research.

The Clerk also enables the public to record their documents electronically through a third-party vendor. Moreover, you can request for copies of public records through mail. You will need to provide the document microfilm number, Marriage Application number or book and page number to order copies. If you lack this information, you can request the Clerk’s Office to locate it for you but there will be a cost. Copy fees are $.25 per photocopy, $.40 per computer copy, $1.00 per microfiche copy. Search/location fee is $ 3.75 per name or per document, unless it takes longer than 15 minutes. If that is the case, the cost is $25 per hour. Certified copies cost $3.75 per document copy plus copy fees. All fees must be paid in advance.

The County Assessor’s Office handles the appraisal and assessment of all taxable property. The office is open from Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm. The office offers the following online services: pay taxes online, property research tool, survey and plat research tool, and the Department of Revenue Tax maps.

The Assessor’s Office is comprised of three divisions. The first division is responsible for the administration of property tax in the county. The second division appraises property in the county and establishes market value on the 1st of January each year. The third division is the records division. It maintains the listing of property owners and their addresses as well as providing accurate maps of those ownerships.
