Coos County, Oregon Overview

Coos County is located in Southwest Oregon. Its county seat is Coquille. The county was created in 1853 from portions of Umpqua and Jackson counties. It is believed that the origin of the county’s name comes from the Native Americans who lived in the area. The county has a total land area of 1,806 square miles where only 210 of the area is water. The County Clerk for Coos County is Debbie Heller. She is the official record keeper and chief election official for the county. The office hours for the Monday through Friday from 8am to 12nn and 1pm to 5pm. The Clerk’s Office is comprised of two divisions: the Records Division and the Elections Division.

The Records Division provides recording of documents for land records and public records such as liens, military discharge documents, and partitions. The division also issues marriage licenses and dog licenses, handles county filings, and processes Board of Property Tax Appeal (BoPTA).

The Elections Division handles voter registration, candidate/measure filing, election management, ballot processing, and redistricting.

The Coos County Assessor handles the appraisal and assessment of properties in the county as well as property tax collection. The Assessor’s Office is comprised of two individuals.
