Benton County, Oregon Overview

Benton County can be found in West Oregon. It was founded in 1847 and named in honor of US Senator Thomas Hart Benton. The county seat is Corvallis. Benton County has a total area of 679 square miles, 676 of which are land. The rest of the 2.7 square miles is water. According to the 2016 census, there are approximately 89,385 people living in the county today. Benton County is bordered in the north by Polk County, Lincoln County in the west, Linn County in the east, and Lane County in the south. In Benton County, the County Clerk’s Office is made up of two divisions – the Elections and Passport Division and the Records and Licenses Division.

You can search for property records using the County Clerk’s Property Records Index Search tool on its website. You can also request for copies by mail. In order to do this, you must first submit the document microfilm number, Marriage Application number, or book and page number. In addition, you will need to pay the associated fees before the copies can be mailed. If you do not have the required document number, you may come to the office and search the indexes in person. You can also request the staff to do it for you. However, you will need to pay an additional fee.

The Elections Division of the County Clerk is responsible for setting up, administering, and conducting all of the elections held in Benton County. Voter registration, election filings, petition drives, issuance of ballots, and campaign information as well as accepting passport applications are also part of the duties of the division.
The Records and Licenses Division is responsible for the safekeeping of public records such as deeds, mortgages, liens, easements, and subdivision plats. The County Clerk is also responsible for issuing marriage licenses and performing civil marriage ceremonies.

The Benton County Assessment Department is responsible for assessing all properties in the county, creating maps, keeping records of property information and ownership, reviewing tax district budgets, computing tax rates, ensures that tax levies are fair and uniform, and operating special programs that give property tax exemptions such as senior deferral and veteran exemptions.

Benton Court Records Information

The Court Records department is responsible for the safekeeping of court records from the Benton County Circuit Court. In most cases, these records are public information and available for review at the courthouse. You can view electronic records using the public computer terminals in Room 106 of the Benton County Courthouse or online. If you wish to get copies of court documents, you can submit a request to the Benton County Circuit Court. Requests can be submitted in person, through email at benton.copy.requests@ojd.state.or.us, or via mail such as the US Postal Service, UPS, or Federal Express. Copies are $ .25 per page plus $5.00 for each document that is certified OR $10.00 for each exemplified copy. Payments are required in advance. Usually, copies are available within a week. However, for cases that are more than 10 years old, the department will require more time.
