Located near the center of Ohio, Fairfield County is named for the area around the original Lancaster. It is approximately 509 square miles in total area, with only 4.2 of that being water. With a population of 146,156 as of the 2010 census, the county is also part of the Appalachian region. It is surrounded to the north by Licking County, the east by Perry County, the south by Hocking County, the southwest by Pickaway County, and the northwest by Franklin County. The County Clerk is responsible for records related to the Common Pleas Court and the Appeals Court within the county. He is also responsible for issuing all titles related to automobiles and watercraft and maintains all records within the county. These records are primarily considered to be public in nature and therefore can be requested at any time. Property related records, which are handled by the Register of Deeds, are available online, however other records must be requested directly from the office, during normal business hours.
