Located at the northern border of Ohio, Cuyahoga County had approximately 1,249,352 people as of the 2016 census, which makes it the second most populous county in the entire state. It is surrounded to the northeast by Lake County, the east by Geauga County, the southeast by Summit County, the southwest by Medina County, the west by Lorain County and the southeast by Portage County. Documents that are handled by the County Recorder include mortgages, liens, leases and deeds as well as military discharges and financial information related to the county. These documents are generally considered public record and can be requested at any time. General deed searches and parcel deed searches can be conducted online; however other information must be requested directly from the office, during normal business hours.

The Auditor for the county of Cuyahoga is responsible for tax related information for all property within the county. This includes ownership information as well as taxable valuations. The office is responsible for making sure that all taxable valuations on real and personal property are maintained accurately. These documents are considered public record and can be requested directly from the office, but are not currently available online.

Court documents are generally considered to be public record once the case has ended and all documents have been completely filed. These documents can then be requested at any time by anyone who would like them. There are generally fees involved with this type of request and many can be searched via the online system. In order to obtain a marriage license in Cuyahoga County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
