Champaign County, Ohio

Champaign County is named for a French term meaning ‘open level country’ and had approximately 40,097 people as of the 2010 census. It’s located near the center of the state and consists of approximately 430 square miles, 429 of which are land. It is surrounded by Logan County to the north, Union County to the northeast, Madison County to the southeast, Clark County to the south, Miami County to the southwest and Shelby County to the northwest. There are 17 zip codes in the county, the most populous of which are 43044, 43072 and 43078, with 79% of the population.

Champaign County Officials Information

Ohio does not have County Clerks to handle regular public records to include birth and death records, military discharges and personal protection orders. Rather, the county has a County Recorder to handle property related documents and a range of government organizations and agencies to handle other documents.

The County Recorder handles property documents that include GIS mapping, plats, surveys and other public records related to real and personal property within Champaign County. These documents are generally considered to be public record, which means that they can be requested at any time and by anyone. There are fees associated with the request, however information can be found through the online system as well as by in person request. Requests must be made during normal business hours within the court system.

Champaign County Court Information

Once a court case has been completed the records are generally considered public record. These documents do have costs associated but can be requested by anyone who wants them. While many records can be requested via the online portal other must be requested (or may be requested) directly from the Clerk of the Court during normal business hours.

Champaign County Marriage License Office
In order to obtain a marriage license in Champaign County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
