Athens County, Ohio
Located at the eastern border (and near the southern one) of Ohio, Athens County is named for Athens, Greece, the ancient center of learning. It is comprised of 508 square miles of total area with 504 of that being land. The county is surrounded to the north by Perry County, the northeast by Morgan County, the east by Washington County, the southeast by Wood County, West Virginia, the south by Meigs County, the west by Vinton County and the northwest by Hocking County. It had approximately 64,757 people as of the 2010 census. It has 18 zip codes with the most populous being 45701 at 53%.

The Recorder is responsible for property records, which are considered public record. This office is not responsible for other documents, including birth and death certificates, personal protection orders and more. These documents are handled by respective locations throughout the county. Military discharge paperwork can also be found in this office, as well as financing statements for the securement of liens. In this office you will also find property records from the county starting in 1790 as well as indices. Because these documents are considered public record they are available for purchase by in person request, with some being available through the online system.
