Yancey County can be found in the western region of North Carolina. Burnsville serves as the county seat. The county was founded in 1833 from parts of Burke and Buncombe counties. It was named after Bartlett Yancey, a US Congressman and speaker of the North Carolina Senate. Based on the 2010 census, there are 17,818 people living in the 313-square mile area.
