Wilkes County can be found in the northwestern region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Wilkesboro. The county was created in 1777 from portions of Surry County and Washington District. It was named in honor of John Wilkes, an English political radical who supported the colonists during the American Revolution. The total area of the county is 757 square miles while the population is 68,740 (2010).
