Wilkes County, North Carolina Overview

Wilkes County can be found in the northwestern region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Wilkesboro. The county was created in 1777 from portions of Surry County and Washington District. It was named in honor of John Wilkes, an English political radical who supported the colonists during the American Revolution. The total area of the county is 757 square miles while the population is 68,740 (2010). The Register of Deeds is responsible for the recording, indexing, and preservation of important public records for the citizens of Wilkes County. The Register of Deeds also issues marriage licenses, files assumed names, and provides certified copies of documents housed in the office.
