Watauga County is located in the northwest region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Boone. Formed in 1849, the county was named after the Watauga River. Watauga is a Native American word that has several translations including beautiful water, village of many springs, and whispering waters. The county’s total area is 312.56 square miles. Based on the 2010 census, the population is 51,079. The area is bordered in the northeast by Ashe County, in the east by Wilkes County, in the south by Caldwell County, in the west by Avery County, and in the northwest by Johnson County (TN).
