Warren County is located in the north central region of North Carolina, along the state’s northern border with Virginia. Warrenton serves as the county seat. Warren County was created in 1779 from half of Bute County. It was named in honor of an American Revolutionary War general and physician, Joseph Warren, who was killed in action during the Battle of Bunker Hill. The total area of the county is 444 square miles with a population of 20,972 (2010). The area is surrounded by the following counties: Mecklenburg and Brunswick Counties (VA) in the north, Northampton County in the northeast, Halifax County in the east, Franklin County in the south, and Vance County in the west. The Register of Deeds is the custodian and manager of a large number of public records for Warren County. Its primary purpose is to enable owners of an interest in property to give notice to the public about their ownership. The office of the Register of Deeds also issues marriage licenses and administers notary oaths. Copies of records housed in the office are provided upon request.
