Union County, North Carolina Overview

Union County is located in the southwest region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Monroe. The county was created in 1842 from portions of Anson County and Mecklenburg County. Its name is the result of a compromise between the Whigs and the Democrats who had different ideas of what to name the county. The total area of Union County is 640 square miles with a population of 201,292 (2010). The area is bordered in the north by Cabarrus County, in the northeast by Stanly County, in the east by Anson County, in the southeast by Chesterfield County (SC), in the southwest by Lancaster County (SC), and in the northwest by Mecklenburg County.
