Tyrrell County is located in the northeast region of North Carolina. The county seat is Columbia County. Tyrrell County was created in 1729 as a precinct of Albemarle County. It was named in honor of one of the Lords Proprietors of Carolina, Sir John Tyrrell. It became a county in 1739 with the abolition of Albemarle County. The total area of Tyrrell County is 594 square miles with a population of 4,407 (2010 census). The counties surrounding this area are Perquimans, Pasquotank, Camden, and Currituck Counties in the north; Dare County in the east; Hyde County in the south; and Washington County in the west.
