Transylvania County is located in the western region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Brevard. The county was formed in 1861 and is believed to be named after the Transylvania Colony an extra-legal colony that was created by the Transylvania Company which was based in North Carolina. The total area of the county is 381 square miles. Based on the 2010 census, there are 33,090 people living in this area. The county is bordered in the north by Haywood County, in the east by Henderson County, in the southeast by Greenville County (SC), in the southwest by Pickens County (SC), and in the west by Jackson County.
