Swain County is located in the western region of North Carolina. The county seat is Bryson City. The county was created from portions of Jackson and Macon Counties in 1871. It was named in honor of former Governor of North Carolina (1832-1835), David L. Swain. According to the 2010 census, there are 13,981 people living in the 541-square foot area. The county is bordered in the north by Sevier County (TN), in the east by Haywood County, in the southeast by Jackson County, in the south by Macon County, in the west by Graham County, and in the northwest by Blount County (TN).
