Surry County can be found in the northwest region of North Carolina. The county seat is Dobson. The county was founded in 1771 from a portion of Rowan County. It was named after an English County, Surrey, which was where William Tryon, the Governor of North Carolina from 1765 to 1771, was born. The total area of the county is the 536 square miles. Based on the 2010 census, the population is 73,673. The county is bordered in the north by Carroll County (VA), in the northeast by Patrick County (VA), in the east by Stokes County, in the southeast by Forsyth County, in the south by Yadkin County, in the southwest by Wilkes County, in the west by Alleghany County, and in the northwest by Grayson County (VA). The Register of Deeds handles the recording, filing, and preservation of a large number of public records. These include vital records, military discharges, and all documents related to real estate.
