Stokes County, North Carolina Overview

Stokes County is located in central region of North Carolina. Danbury serves as the county seat. The county was created in 1789 from a portion of Surry County. It was named in honor of an American Revolutionary War captain, John Stokes, who later became a judge of the United States district court for North Carolina. Based on the 2010 census, there are 47,401 people living in the 456-square mile area. The county is bordered by Patrick County (VA) in the north, Henry County (VA) in the northeast, Rockingham County in the east, Forsyth County in the south, and Surry County in the west. The Register of Deeds is tasked with the recording, indexing, and preservation of a variety of county records. These include deeds, military discharges, deeds of trust, powers of attorney, UCCs, right of way agreements, satisfactions of deeds of trust, separation agreements, and other miscellaneous records.
