Stanly County is found in the southwest region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Albemarle. The county was created in 1841 from a portion of Montgomery County. It was named in honor of John Stanly who served several terms in the North Carolina House of Commons and the United States House of Representatives. The total land area of the county is 405 square miles. According to the 2010 census, there are 60,585 people living in the area. Stanly County is bordered in the north by Rowan County, in the northeast by Davidson County, in the east by Montgomery County, in the south by Anson County and Union County, in the west by Cabarrus County.
