Scotland County can be found in the south central region of North Carolina. Laurinburg is the county seat. The county was created in 1812 from Richmond County. Most of the earliest settlers in the area were Highland Scots. The total area of the county is 320 square miles with a population of 36,157 (2010). The surrounding counties are Hoke County in the northeast, Robeson County in the southeast, Marlboro County (SC) in the southwest, Richmond County in the northwest, and Moore County in the north.
