Sampson County is located in the southeast region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Clinton. The county was created in 1784 after the American Revolutionary War from a portion of Duplin County. The county was named after John Sampson, the first Register of Deeds for Duplin County. The total area of the county is 962 square miles. According to the 2010 census, 63,431 people are living in the county. The surrounding counties are Johnston County in the north, Wayne County in the northeast, Duplin County in the east, Pender County in the south, Bladen County in the southwest, Cumberland County in the west, and Harnett County in the northwest.
