Rutherford County can be located in the southwestern region of North Carolina. Rutherfordton is the county seat. A portion of Tryon County was used to create the Rutherford County in 1779. It was named in honor of an American Revolutionary War general, Griffith Rutherford. The total area of the county is 566 square miles with a population of 67,810 according to the 2010 census. The adjacent counties are McDowell County in the north, Burke County in the northeast, Cleveland County in the east, Cherokee and Spartanburg Counties (SC) in the south, Polk County in the southwest, Henderson County in the west, and Buncombe County in the northwest.
