Rowan County is located in the northwest region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Salisbury. The county was created from a portion of Anson County in 1753. It was named in honor of the acting governor of North Carolina from 1753 to 1754, Matthew Rowan. The county’s total area is 524 square miles with a population of 139,142 (2010 census). The surrounding counties are Davie County in the north, Davidson County in the east, Stanly and Cabarrus Counties in the south, and Iredell County in the west.
