Rockingham County is located in the central region of North Carolina. Wentworth serves as the county seat. In 1785, a portion of Guilford County was used to create Rockingham County. It was named in honor of the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, Charles Watson-Wentworth, who served as British Prime Minister from 1765 to 1766 and in 1782. The county’s total area is 573 square miles and its population, according to the 2010 census, is 93,643.
