Robeson County can be found in the south central region of North Carolina. Lumberton serves as the county seat. The county was created in 1787 from a portion of Bladen County. It was named after a Revolutionary War hero, Col. Thomas Robeson of Tar Heel. According to the 2010 census, there are 134,168 people living in the 951-square mile area. The surrounding counties are Cumberland County in the northeast, Bladen County in the east, Columbus County in the southeast, Dillon County (SC) in the southwest, Scotland and Hoke Counties in the northwest. Robeson County’s Register of Deeds is responsible for the safekeeping of a large amount of public records. These include real estate related documents, vital records, and military discharges. The office is open Mondays through Fridays from 8:15am to 5:15pm, except on holidays.

The Register of Deeds also offers the following services: issuance of marriage licenses, notary public applications, business name registration, and cancellation of deeds. The application of a marriage license can be done online. The office also accepts all document types for Electronic Recording except plats. Copies of public records are also available through the Register of Deeds. Certified copies of vital records are $10 each. Certified copies of other documents are $5 for the first page and $2 for each additional page. All checks must be made payable to the Robeson County Register of Deeds.
