Richmond County is located in the south central region of North Carolina. Rockingham is the county seat. The county was created in 1779 and named in honor of the 3rd Duke of Richmond and Lennox, Charles Lennox, who supported the colonists during the American Revolution. The total area of the county is 480 square miles. According to the 2010 census, there are 46,639 people living in the area. The county is bordered in the north by Montgomery County, in the northeast by Moore County, in the southeast by Scotland County, in the south by Marlboro County (SC), and in the west by Anson County.
