Polk County can be found in the western region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Columbus. The county was founded in 1855 from portions of Henderson and Rutherford Counties. It was named in honor of an American Revolutionary War colonel, William Polk. The county’s total area is 239 square miles with a population of 20,510 (2010). The counties surrounding the area are Rutherford County in the northeast, Spartanburg County (SC) in the southeast, Greenville County (SC) in the southwest, and Henderson County in the west.
