Pitt County can be found in the northeastern region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Greenville. The county was created in 1760 from a portion of Beaufort County and named in honor of then Secretary of State for the Southern Department, William Pitt the Elder. According to the 2013 census, there are 174,263 people living in the 655-square mile area, making the county the 17th most populated county in the state. The adjacent counties are Martin County in the northeast, Beaufort County in the east, Craven County in the southeast, Lenoir and Greene Counties in the southwest, Wilson County in the west, and Edgecombe County in the northwest. The Register of Deeds is responsible for the recording of all land documents in Pitt County including agreements, assignments, assumed names, corporate documents, deeds of trust cancellations, deeds of trust, deeds, easements, leases, and subdivision maps. The office also handles the filing of Uniform Commercial Code financing statements, issues marriage licenses, maintains birth and death records, records military discharges, and retains notary public commissions, and administers notary oaths.

Pitt Court Records Information

The Clerk of Superior Court is the custodian of all court records for the District and Superior Courts of Pitt County. Viewing these documents can be done using the public access terminals inside the office. Requests for copies of court records can be submitted to the office in person. The Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) program also allows the public to gain access to court records online. Copy requests can be submitted.
