Perquimans County can be found in the northeastern region of North Carolina. Hertford is the county seat. Perquimans County was originally established as Berkely Precinct. Its name was changed to Perquimans in 1684 after the Perquimans Indians who belonged to the Algonquian Tribe. It gained county status in 1739. The total area of the county is 329 square miles with a population of 12,453 (2010).
