Pender County is located in the southeastern region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Burgaw. The county was created in 1875 from a portion of New Hanover County. It was named in honor of a Confederate general, William Dorsey Pender, who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. According to the 2010 census, there are 52,217 people currently living in the 933-square mile area. The counties bordering the area are Pender County in the north, Onslow County in the east, New Hanover County and Brunswick County in the south, Columbus County in the southwest, Bladen County in the west, and Sampson County in the northwest.
