Orange County is located in the north central region of North Carolina. Hillsborough is the county seat. The county was established in 1752 from portions of Bladen, Granville, and Johnston Counties. It was named in honor of William V of Orange, an infant whose mother Anne was the Dutch Republic’s regent at the time. The county’s total area is 401 square miles and its population is 133,801 (2010). The county is bordered in the north by Caswell and Person Counties, in the east by Durham County, in the south by Chatham County, and in the west by Alamance County.
