Onslow County can be found in the southeast region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Jacksonville. The county was founded in 1734 as a precinct and named in honor of the longest serving Speaker of the British House of Commons, Arthur Onslow. In 1739, it gained county status. The total area of the county is 906 square miles with a population of 177,772 (2010). The county is bordered in the north by Jones County, in the east by Carteret County, in the southwest by Pender County, and in the northwest by Duplin County.
