Moore County is located in the south central region of North Carolina. Carthage is the county seat. Moore County was founded in 1785 from a portion of Cumberland County. It was named in honor of an American Revolutionary War officer who also served as associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Alfred Moore. The total area of the county is 706 square miles. According to the 2017 census, there are 97,264 people living in the county. The county is bordered in Randolph County and Chatham County in the north, Lee County in the northeast, Harnett County in the east, Cumberland County in southeast, Hoke County in the south, Richmond Count in the southwest, and Montgomery County in the west.
