Mitchell County was founded in 1861 from portions of Burke, Caldwell, McDowell, Watauga, and Yancey counties. The county was named in honor of a professor at the University of North Carolina, Elisha Mitchell. The total area of the county is 222 square miles. Based on the 2010 census, there are 15,579 people living in the area. The county is bordered in the north by Carter County (TN), in the east by Avery County, in the south by McDowell County, in the west by Yancey County, and in the northwest by Unicoi County (TN).
