McDowell County can be found in the western region of North Carolina. The county seat is Marion. McDowell County was founded in 1842 from portions of Burke and Rutherford Counties. It was named in honor of a Revolutionary War leader, Joseph McDowell. The total area of the county is 446 square miles. The population is 44,996 based on the 2010 census. The county is bordered in the north by Mitchell and Avery County, in the east by Burke County, in the south by Rutherford County, in the west by Buncombe County, and in the northwest by Yancey County.
