Martin County is located in the northeast region of North Carolina. Williamston is the county seat. Martin County was created in 1774 from parts of Halifax and Tyrrell Counties. It was named in honor of the last royal governor of North Carolina, Josiah Martin. The total area of the county is 462 square miles. Based on the 2010 census, the population in the county is 24,505. The county is bordered in the north by Bertie County in the north, Washington County in the east, Beaufort and Pitt Counties in the south, Edgecombe County in the west, and Halifax County in the northeast.
