Lee County can be located in the south central region of North Carolina. Sanford is the county seat. The county was created in 1907 and named in honor of the General in Chief of the Armies of the Confederate States in 1865, General Robert E. Lee. The total area of the county is 259 square miles. According to the 2010 census, there are 57,866 people living in the county. Lee County is bordered by Chatham County in the north, Harnett County in the east, and Moore County in the west.
