Jackson County is located in the western region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Sylva. The county was formed in 1851 from portions of Macon and Haywood counties. It was named in honor of the 7th US President, Andrew Jackson. Based on the 2010 census, there are 40,271 people living in the 495-square mile area. The county is bordered in the north by Swain County, in the northeast by Haywood County, in the southeast by Transylvania County, in the south by Oconee County, in the west by Macon County.
